Hindeloopen

As you approach, Hindeloopen appears quite suddenly out of its idyllic surroundings. The coastal village, its sights set on remote horizons, is like no other.

Discover the world of Hindeloopen textiles and furniture, richly decorated with flowers. In the narrow streets, pop in at Roosje Hindeloopen studio for a look at the furniture or Atelier Glashouwer for traditional textiles originally used for folk costumes.

Hindeloopen is one of the historical “Eleven Towns” of Friesland province. Although it did not have a harbour, for a long time it was known as an important Hanseatic town and fishing port. The many historical buildings highlight how prosperous the town once was. A prime example is the Town Hall which now houses the Hidde Nijland Museum. As soon as you cross the threshold you are thrown back in the 18th century, surrounded by a unique collection of Hindeloopen furniture, costumes, artefacts and decorative objects from the period. Moreover, the museum offers a treasure chest of information on local history in which shipping and fishery played important parts. Talking of shipping, while you amble around town, you will not fail to notice that many houses are decorated with an anchor: a symbol that the house belonged to a captain.

Besides engaging in cultural activities, you could also go to the beach for a plunge in the lake or a walk. Enjoy tasty food and drinks in a range of bars and restaurants.
