A visit to Marken is like looking at an antique postcard. As if time has stood still. That is the way it looks and feels in Marken. In every way.
For many centuries Marken was an island in the sea. Due to its isolation it developed its own unique dialect called Merkerers. Nowadays, although it is connected to the mainland by a dike, Marken still has that island feel and look to it that sets it apart from nearby villages on the mainland. If you really want to get a genuine taste of Marken… take a bite of smoked eel and you will experience an important part of the village’s history. In Marker Museum you will learn not only about eel fishery, but also about whale hunting and innumerable other aspects of the village’s history. It is a great place to find out about the islanders’ arts and crafts, customs, costumes and beliefs. Finally, a selfie with the light house, “Het paard van Marken”, will make a great souvenir.
