The gateway to Friesland province – for boaters anyway. Lemmer used to be defended by forts and castles. Today nobody is turned away.
The lighthouse (a replica of the 1910 original) marks the entrance to the harbour and featured in a film. The most famous point of interest in town is Woudagemaal, a steam-driven pumping station. But the Town Hall (1898) is also worth a visit, not least because it houses the tourist information point and Lemster Fiifgea, a museum and 1920 period room. It boasts a colourful collection of local carved pottery; as well as objects that relate to fishery and shipping that used to take place on the Zuiderzee; tools that were used for excavating peat; and artefacts from daily life in Lemmer in times of old.
