IJsselmeer, around the IJsselmeer without aflsuitdijk [7-99]

This tour follows the coast of the former Zuiderzee. After the completion of the Afsluitdijk, the barrier dyke which cuts off the inlet, this former sea was transformed into a lake surrounded by fertile polders. The six counties surrounding the IJsselmeer visited by this tour offer a wide variety of landscape and history. While enjoying marvellous panoramas, you will travel on dykes and cycle paths alongside water gates, reed beds and swamps, national parks, meadows, farms and picturesque fishing villages. In the historical cities of Amsterdam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Kampen and Harderwijk many reminders can be seen of the rich era of the VOC (the Dutch East India Company)

Day 2 Huizen – Volendam or Katwoude – 64 km
On your first day of cycling you will follow the southern shore of the IJsselmeer until you reach Muiden, where you will find the medieval castle of Muiderslot. From here, it is a short ride to Amsterdam, where you will cycle through the city centre before crossing the IJ by ferry. A pleasant cycle along the former estuary brings you to Waterland, with its bird-rich peat meadows, ancient canals and watercourses. In the island village of Marken, where the houses are built of wood, it almost seems as if time has stood still. Travelling either by boat or via Monnickendam you will arrive in Volendam. You will either be staying on the harbour quay or at the mill in Katwoude.

Day 3 Volendam or Katwoude – Enkhuizen 54 km
Today you will cycle over the old Zuiderzee dyke by way of the town of Edam – famous for its cheese – and the ancient and picturesque town of Hoorn, where you will see many imposing buildings from the Golden Age (17th century). In Enkhuizen, where you will spend the night, you should plan to take a city tour and a visit to the Zuiderzee Museum is also recommended.

Day 4 Enkhuizen – Oudemirdum or Lemmer – 41/56 km
On day 4 you will cross the IJsselmeer by ferry to the Frisian town of Stavoren. From here you can make a tour of scenic Hindeloopen. Cycling further through the wooded, hilly countryside of Gaasterland, you will reach Oudemirdum. Your hotel can be found either on the Brink or a little further on in the port town of Lemmer. .

Day 5 Oudemirdum or Lemmer – Giethoorn – 60/45 km
After a well-deserved night’s rest, you will pass the Lemmer steam pumping station before crossing the Weerribben. This National Park is a unique peatland area with an exceptional wealth of characteristic flora and fauna. Your hotel is in Giethoorn, the spectacularly pretty “Venice of the North”, with its myriad arched bridges, boats and thatched farmhouses.

Day 6 Giethoorn – Nunspeet – 63 km
From Giethoorn you will cycle to the Hanseatic city of Kampen, situated on the IJssel river. Via the attractive fortress city of Elburg, and passing many small lakes, you will reach your goal of Nunspeet, situated at the edge of the Veluwe, the largest forest in the Netherlands.

Day 7 Nunspeet – Huizen and departure – 61 km
On this last day you will cycle through the old port city of Harderwijk and the fishing village of Spakenburg before returning to Huizen through the wide Eempolder.
