Around the Markermeer [5-00]

After completion of the Afsluitdijk, the Zuiderzee was transformed into the IJsselmeer. Thirty years later, further large areas of land were reclaimed. On this tour you will cycle along and through the former estuary. The first two days of cycling follow the south and west coast. In Amsterdam, Hoorn and Enkhuizen, many reminders of the 17th century Golden Age – heyday of the Netherlands – can be seen. Following a boat trip on the IJsselmeer to the island village of Urk, you will cycle through the ‘new land’. Traversing this polder landscape – only sixty years old – you will pass through the new cities of Lelystad and Almere and the unique nature reserve of the Oostvaardersplassen.

Day 2 Huizen – Volendam – 64 km
On your first day of cycling you will follow the southern shore of the IJsselmeer until you reach Muiden, where you will find the medieval castle of Muiderslot. From here, it is a short ride to Amsterdam, where you will cycle through the city centre before crossing the IJ by ferry. A pleasant cycle along the former estuary brings you to Waterland, with its bird-rich peat meadows, ancient canals and watercourses. In the island village of Marken, where the houses are built of wood, it almost seems as if time has stood still. Travelling either by boat or via Monnickendam you will arrive in Volendam.

Day 3 Volendam – Enkhuizen – 54 km
Today you will cycle over the old Zuiderzee dyke by way of the town of Edam – famous for its cheese – and the ancient and picturesque town of Hoorn, where you will see many imposing buildings from the Golden Age (17th century). In Enkhuizen, where you will spend the night, you should plan to take a city tour and a visit to the Zuiderzee Museum is also recommended.

Day 4 Enkhuizen – Lelystad – 31/58 km
The day starts with a boat trip on the IJsselmeer to the fishing village of Urk. Here you can cycle to Schokland, like Urk, a former island. Both of these unique enclaves justly deserve their place on the World Heritage List. After this, you will ride through the Flevopolder, ‘the new land’, to Lelystad.

Day 5 Lelystad – Huizen and departure – 50 km
Your route will take you past the Batavia Yard, where ships from the Golden Age, important to the maritime history of the Netherlands, are reconstructed. After that you will reach the Oostvaardersplassen. This unique nature reserve will give you some idea of how the Netherlands would have looked thousands of years ago. Your return to Huizen will take you along the banks of the Gooi.
